First of all, I said in my last post I'd post an update on the 24th about the turtle project, that post will be online next thursday, because I couldn't take any pictures on the 24th. I'll explain that in the next post.
Today I decided to write something about bajan (barbadian) food. You have to know that Bajans are very proud to be be bajans, you can also see that in the ocal products. When I first went out to buy groceries, I hoped that there would be some local stuff, so I didn't had to buy so much imported food. This is important to me because all imported food has a much higher CO2 balance and tastes not as good as the local food.
I was happiy surprised when I saw, that a lot of food is produced in Barbados and it's like in switzerland easy to see which products that are.
Of course most of the tropical fruits like Mangos, Pineapples and Bananas are bajan food, But you can also buy milk, eggs, Salad and meat produced on Barbados,

As you can see most products are labeled as 100% bajan, product of Barbados etc.
I like the idea, to support local food more than imported food. Sometimes you pay for the same product, for example pineapples not the same price of course. Mostly the bajan product is cheaper, which i find very good.
As i heared from my very kind neighbour bajans tend to cook at home much more than they go out to eat. Fast food in Barbados such as KFC or Cheffette (bajan fast food chain) is very expensive in comparison to a self made meal. This is what's it like in switzerland, in germany or America however fast food is a lot cheaper. I find it not good to support cheap unhelathy food, it should be like in Barbados, that you normally cook your food yourself.
I like cooking, because you can experiment a lot and with very few things you can create delicious dishes.
One thing i have not mentioned yet, is the seafood of course. In my town, there's the so called Paynes Bay fish market. They sell different fish each day, depending on what supplies they get. You can have Tuna, Red, Snapper, Dolphin (which is not actually Dolphin but Mahi-Mahi, very delicious!). I could make the list a lot longer. One of the most popular fishes is flying fish, which is also the heraldic animal of barbados acording to a lot of bajan chefs. It is eaten in a lot of forms, such as soup, fried and as sanwiches (in the morning).
I also tried lionfish, which we caught on a dive in the morning. I wasn't disappointed, it's as delicious as my co-workers said. One day i bought myself black-jack from the fish market and I also tried red snapper, which was both very good.
I will probably upload another bajan food blog post in the future, because this topic is enormous. So far I'll try a lot of bajans dishes.
Next blog update as said most likely on thursday.
